About Jekyll Island – the Public Treasure on Georgia’s Coast
Jekyll Island’s exquisite natural beauty has long drawn guests to its barrier shores. Surrounded by picturesque marshes and breathtaking oceanfront, Georgia’s smallest barrier island is a peaceful coastal habitat. The island has a vibrant history, originally inhabited by the Guale (Wah-li) Indians, Jekyll Island was explored by the Spanish and first settled by the English. At the turn of the century, those who represented 1/6 of the world’s wealth made the Jekyll Island Club their exclusive retreat. Recognizing that the island’s natural beauty and vibrant history set it apart from any other coastal destination, the Governor and the Georgia state legislature purchased the island from the Jekyll Island Club in 1947 and established the island as a State Park. From a modern, oceanfront convention center and brand new, Westin Jekyll Island hotel, to the world-renown Georgia Sea Turtle Center, local shops, and a new beachfront promenade (all redeveloped within their original footprints), Jekyll Island has spent nearly a decade revitalizing the island’s amenities to offer distinctive experiences for all to enjoy.
